The Boji Tower
The Story
Three stages of ownership,
same commitment to Lansing
Standing at the intersection of Michigan politics and American manufacturing, the Boji Tower serves as a monument to the hard-working men and women of Michigan. At the time of its construction it was the tallest building in Michigan outside of Detroit and remains the tallest in Lansing. In fact, the Lansing City Council amended an ordinance prohibiting buildings from being taller than 150 feet to accommodate its construction. The towering structure was the brainchild of automotive pioneer and philanthropist R.E. Olds. The bronze doors of the elevators are still adorned with scenes from this manufacturing giant’s life.
Called the Olds Tower by many, the building was officially known as the Capital Bank Tower and completed in 1931. The building was financed by R.E. Olds and named for the Capital National Bank which would occupy the majority of the lower floors. A 1931 Lansing State Journal write-up described the completion of the building and the bank’s success, “That the Capital National Bank has grown to its present proportions is due to its good fortune in being directed throughout its history by men to whom Lansing’s welfare has always been a matter of warm personal concern.”
In 1954 the building was sold to the Michigan National Bank and renamed the Michigan National Bank Tower. The bank’s founder, Howard J. Stoddard, would go on to construct the Stoddard Building across the street. The glowing clock and Michigan National Bank signage situated atop the building would remain an iconic sight, welcoming visitors to the state’s capital for decades. The clock still greets visitors to this day.
In 1998, Boji family patriarch Eliya (Louie) Boji and son Ron Boji, purchased the tower. Louie, who had immigrated from Iraq in pursuit of the American dream, made an investment in his family’s future and Michigan’s capital city. This set the stage for investments by the Boji Group in Lansing for the next two decades and beyond. With their recent purchase of the Stoddard Building, renamed The Louie, the shared history of the two buildings continues.
In 2005 the building was renamed the Boji Tower and still stands as a monument to the people to “whom Lansing’s welfare is a matter of warm personal concern.”
“Boji Group has experienced tremendous growth because they do things right. We experience it firsthand as a tenant in the Boji Tower – Lansing’s most iconic building.”
